Headings

Do not set heading levels based on the appearance of the headings. Set them based on the outline/structure of the page.

Heading 1

The page should only have one Heading 1, and it is usually set in the Page Properties (as Page Heading), not inserted into the page's content.

Headings 2-6

The heading levels in the page's content should follow in order, 2 - 6, without skipping levels as the numbers increase. A page's outline might look something like this:

  • Page Heading (Heading 1)
    • Heading 2
      • Heading 3
      • Heading 3
        • Heading 4
          • Heading 5
            • Heading 6
            • Heading 6
            • Heading 6
          • Heading 5
            • Heading 6
            • Heading 6
        • Heading 4
          • Heading 5
    • Heading 2
      • Heading 3
        • Heading 4
        • Heading 4
      • Heading 3

(This should not be considered a common example. Most webpages don't use all 6 heading levels, and many pages only have a few headings, often only using levels 1 - 3.)

Each heading may be followed by 1 or more paragraphs, other content, or immediately by the next heading.

Headings should sufficiently describe the topic of the content in their section. If multiple headings have similar wording, distinguishing information should be at the beginning of the heading, which will make it easier for those using a list of headings to navigate the page.

If you need more than 6 heading levels to structure your content, you will most likely need to reconsider your page's structure, either regrouping content under different headings or splitting the content across multiple pages.
